Small Batch Distillery in Detroit, Michigan: Handcrafted Excellence
In the roaring twenties, Detroit fueled prohibition and an entrepreneurial spirit that didn’t follow the rules. A century later, eight childhood friends are starting a small distillery to make alcohol the old fashion way.
When you step inside the distillery, you can feel that passion. The smell of grain and the bright glow of copper stills welcome you into a modern day factory. The rickhouse is lined with barrels, creating a distinguished event space that can host up to 250 people.
The bourbon is a mix of rye and corn, with a 5% specialty roasted barley malts from Washtenaw and Kent counties. The rye gives the whiskey a slight smokiness with notes of toasted oak, campfire and butterscotch. The corn and rye are sourced from Wing Farms in Dexter, Michigan.
The company also recently launched a honey bourbon. The bourbon is 80 proof and was made with four-year-old bourbon from Wing Farms infused with a local wildflower honey from Garrison Brothers. The infusion process is unique: Garrison Brothers cut used bourbon barrel staves into cubes and then soaked them in the honey, allowing it to absorb for seven months. The result is a bourbon with a sweet, honey flavor that will be available this summer at the distillery and select bars.
